A portable charger plus a small set of NEMA plug adapterslets you charge from many different outlets on a trip — a 14-50 at one house, a 6-50 in a workshop, a standard 120V outlet in a pinch. The one rule you cannot break: the adapter must not let the charger pull more current than the outlet and circuit can safely supply.

Why travel adapters are useful

Outlets vary by building. A portable that comes with, or accepts, interchangeable NEMA plugs can adapt to whatever 240V or 120V receptacle you find, turning a friend's garage or a rental into a charging spot. The amperage trap

This is where people get hurt. A plug adapter changes the shape of the plug, not the capacityof the circuit behind it. If you adapt a 40-amp charger onto a 30-amp outlet without dialing the charger's current down, you overload that circuit. A good portable lets you set its amperage, and many adapter systems signal the safe limit to the charger automatically — but you are ultimately responsible for matching the draw to the weakest link. Know your outlet type before you plug in.

What to carry, and what to avoid

Carry the one or two adapters for outlets you actually expect (commonly a 14-50 and a standard 120V), a quality 14-50 at your home base, and nothing sketchy. Never chain adapters, never use an extension cordto make up distance, and never adapt onto a worn or unknown outlet. Used within its limits, a travel adapter set is one of the most useful things in an EV owner's trunk.
