Which EV Charging Adapter Do I Need?

Two questions settle it: what plug does your car have, and what charger are you trying to use. Here's the decision, direction and all.

Which adapter you need is decided by two things: your car's connector (J1772 or NACS) and the charger you want to use. A J1772 car using a Tesla-style charger needs a NACS-to-J1772 adapter; a NACS-port car (a Tesla, or a 2025+ EV) using a J1772 charger needs a J1772-to-NACS adapter. Get the direction right and you are done.

Adapters look alike and point opposite ways, which is why the wrong one gets ordered so often. This guide is just two questions.

Question 1: What connector does your car have?

Look at your charge port. A rounder, five-pin AC inlet is J1772— the plug on most non-Tesla EVs through about 2024. A slimmer, flatter Tesla-style inlet is NACS — every Tesla, and a growing number of 2025-onward EVs. Unsure? Our NACS vs J1772 explainer has clear pictures of each.

Question 2: What charger are you trying to use?

Now match your car to the charger you keep running into:

  • J1772 car + Tesla-style (NACS) charger— for example using a Tesla Wall or Destination Connector at a hotel. You need a NACS-to-J1772 adapter (it plugs onto the Tesla connector and presents J1772 to your car). See the roundup; the Lectron is the proven pick.

The mistake to avoid. These adapters are for AC Level 2 charging only. None of them enables DC fast charging or Tesla Supercharging — that is handled by the car's port and automaker-supplied DC adapters, as our Supercharger access guide explains. What to check before buying either direction

Whichever way it points, look for a named UL listing(UL 2251 or UL 2252) — the standard written for connectors carrying charging current — and a snug, rattle-free fit. Current rating matters less than people think: any reputable adapter is rated well above a home circuit's 48-amp ceiling. How do I know which EV charging adapter to buy?

Answer two questions: what connector your car has (J1772 or NACS) and what charger you want to use. A J1772 car using a Tesla-style charger needs a NACS-to-J1772 adapter; a NACS-port car using a J1772 charger needs a J1772-to-NACS adapter. Same connector on both means no adapter.

What's the difference between a NACS-to-J1772 and a J1772-to-NACS adapter?

They point opposite ways. A NACS-to-J1772 adapter lets a J1772 car use a Tesla-style charger; a J1772-to-NACS adapter lets a Tesla or NACS-port car use a J1772 charger. Buying the wrong direction is the most common adapter mistake.

Does any of these adapters enable Supercharging?

No. These are AC Level 2 adapters only. DC fast charging and Tesla Supercharging are handled by the car's port and automaker-supplied DC adapters, never a cheap passive AC adapter.

What certification should an EV adapter have?

Look for a named UL 2251 or UL 2252 listing — the connector-safety standards for current-carrying adapters — plus a snug fit and solid housing. Any reputable adapter is rated well above a home circuit's limit, so the listing matters more than the amp number.
