Charging a Tesla Model Y at Home

The best-selling EV in the country charges at home three ways — here is the amperage that matches it and whether you need an adapter.

The Tesla Model Y charges at home over its NACS port at up to about 11.5 kW, so a 48-amp Level 2 chargerlets it draw its full AC speed. You have three routes: a native-NACS home charger, Tesla's own wall or mobile connector, or any ordinary J1772 charger with a J1772-to-NACS adapter. All three do the same job overnight.

The Model Y does not need the Tesla-branded charger. Its onboard charger sets the ceiling — roughly 11.5 kW on most trims — and any unit that can supply that much current fills the car just as fast. What matters is the plug shape and the amperage, not the badge.

The three ways to charge a Model Y at home

  • A native-NACS home charger. Plugs straight into the Model Y with no adapter. See the best NACS home chargers.
  • A J1772 charger plus an adapter. The J1772 network is far larger, so a standard J1772 unit like the Emporia Level 2 plus a J1772-to-NACS adapter is often the cheaper, more flexible path.
  • Tesla's Mobile Connector or Wall Connector.Fine, but not required — and a plug-in J1772 unit travels better if you ever move.

What amperage to buy

Because most Model Ys accept about 11.5 kW, a 48-amp chargerreaches the car's AC ceiling — that needs a 60-amp circuit, so confirm your panel with the wire size and breaker guide. A 40-amp plug-in unit on a NEMA 14-50 outlet still adds a full day's range overnight and is the simpler install. Some early or base trims charge slower — check your car's charging screen for its real AC limit before paying for 48 amps.

No. Any Level 2 charger works. A native-NACS unit plugs in directly; a standard J1772 charger works with a J1772-to-NACS adapter. The car charges at the same speed regardless of brand.
