How to Use a ChargePoint Charging Station

ChargePoint runs many of the Level 2 chargers you will meet at workplaces and shops — here is how to start a session and what it costs.

ChargePoint is mostly a Level 2 network you will meet at workplaces, shopping centers and parking garages, plus some DC fast sites. To use one: open the ChargePoint app (or tap your ChargePoint card), select or scan the station, plug in, and the session starts. Pricing is set by each site owner, so it is shown on the station before you commit.

Because ChargePoint hardware is often owned by a business rather than ChargePoint itself, sessions can be free, time-based, or per-kWh — the app shows which before you start.

Getting set up

Create a free ChargePoint account and add a card. You can order a physical RFID card too, handy where cell signal is poor. Find nearby stations in the app or via our station-finding guide.

Starting a session

  • Tap the station in the app, or hold your ChargePoint card to the reader.
  • Take the J1772 connector (Level 2) or CCS1 (DC) and seat it firmly in your port.
  • The session begins; the app shows power, energy added, and cost.

For a Tesla or other NACS-port car using a J1772 ChargePoint Level 2 unit, you will need a J1772-to-NACS adapter.

Is ChargePoint free to use?
Sometimes. ChargePoint hardware is owned by individual businesses, so a session can be free, time-based, or billed per kWh. The app shows the price before you start.
Do I need a ChargePoint card?
No — the app works fine. A physical RFID card is a convenient backup where cell signal is weak or the app is slow to connect.
Can a Tesla use a ChargePoint station?
Yes. Most ChargePoint Level 2 units use a J1772 connector, so a Tesla or other NACS-port car needs a J1772-to-NACS adapter.
