Why Won't My EV Charge at a Public Station?

A stall that will not start is almost always one of six things — here is the order to check them, fastest fix first.

A public charger that will not start is almost always one of six things: a loose connector, a payment or app hiccup, a faulty stall, a connector mismatch, a cold or full battery, or a car-side setting. Work through them fastest-fix-first and you will usually be charging within a minute or two.

1. Reseat the connector

The single most common cause. Unplug and push the connector firmly home until it clicks; a partial seat stops the handshake. On a Tesla/NACS car using an adapter, make sure the adapter is fully latched at both ends.

2. Check payment and the app

A declined card, an app that lost signal, or a session started on the wrong stall number will all stop it. Restart the app, re-tap the card, or try a contactless card if the app is struggling. See how to pay for EV charging.

3. Move to another stall

Individual stalls fail. If one will not start, try the next — this is exactly why we tell you to pick a site with several stalls. Report the dead one in the app.

4. Confirm the connector matches

Make sure you are on the right plug for your car — CCS1, NACS or the correct adapter. Our connector-compatibility guide covers what fits what.

5. Warm battery, check state of charge

A very cold battery may refuse or crawl until it warms; preconditioning helps. A nearly full battery also charges slowly by design.

6. Car-side settings

Why does a public charger say error or fault?

Most often a loose connector or a faulty stall. Reseat the plug first, then move to another stall and report the broken one in the app. Our error-codes guide covers car-side messages.

Why did my payment go through but charging never started?

Usually the connector was not fully seated, or the stall itself is faulty. Reseat firmly; if it still fails, stop the session and switch stalls — most networks will not charge you for a failed session.

Can cold weather stop public charging?

A very cold battery can charge slowly or briefly refuse until it warms. Preconditioning on the drive over prevents most cold-related slowdowns.
