Charging a BMW i4 at Home

The i4's 11 kW onboard charger makes a 48-amp unit the right pick — here's the setup, through BMW's move to NACS.

The BMW i4 charges at home over AC with an 11 kW onboard charger, so a 48-amp Level 2 chargerlets it draw its full rate — roughly 35 miles of range per hour. Home charging is standard; the connector is the part that changed with BMW's move to NACS in 2025.

The i4 is a straightforward car to live with at home: a generous onboard charger, a normal 240-volt circuit, and a clear match to a good 48-amp unit. Get the connector right for your model year and the rest is simple.

The connector: CCS1 before 2025, native NACS after

Pre-2025 i4s use a CCS1 inlet, which accepts a J1772 Level 2 connector natively — any standard J1772 home charger works with no adapter. 2025 and newer i4s have a native NACS port; those charge at home with a NACS home charger, or a J1772 charger plus a J1772-to-NACS adapter. The shape of your charge inlet tells you which you have.

What amperage to buy

Because the i4 accepts 11 kW, a 48-amp chargerlets it pull the full AC rate. That needs a 60-amp circuit — confirm your panel via the wire size and breaker guide. A 40-amp charger such as the Emporia Level 2 still refills the i4 overnight for any normal driving if a 60-amp circuit is not available.

Hardwire or plug in?

A plug-in charger on a NEMA 14-50 outlet caps at 40 amps; hardwiring unlocks the full 48. For an i4 kept long-term, hardwiring a 48-amp unit uses all 11 kW. If you value the flexibility of a plug, a 40-amp portable is only modestly slower and moves with you.
