The J1772 Connector Explained
The five-pin plug on most non-Tesla EVs. What J1772 does, where it fits in the NACS transition, and how to charge across the divide.

J1772(officially SAE J1772, and nicknamed "the J-plug") is the standard AC charging connector used by most non-Tesla EVs sold in North America through about 2024. It handles Level 1 and Level 2 charging, it is the plug on nearly every home and public AC charger, and understanding it makes the whole NACS-versus-J1772 adapter question simple.
If you drive a Chevy, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, VW, BMW, Nissan or most other non-Tesla EV built through roughly 2024, this is the plug you charge with at home. Here is what it is and how it fits the wider connector landscape.
What J1772 actually is
J1772 is a five-pin AC connector: two pins carry power, one is ground, and two are signal pins that let the car and charger communicate — agreeing on how much current to draw before any power flows. That handshake is why an EVSE is more than a dumb cable. J1772 carries only AC power (Level 1 at 120 volts, Level 2 at 240 volts); it does not, by itself, do DC fast charging.
How J1772 relates to CCS and NACS
This is where people get confused, so here it is plainly:
- CCS1(Combined Charging System) is just J1772 with two extra DC pins added below it. A CCS car uses the J1772 portion for AC home charging and the full CCS inlet for DC fast charging — which is why a CCS car accepts a J1772 plug natively.
- NACS (the former Tesla connector, now SAE J3400) is the newer single plug that does both AC and DC. It is replacing J1772/CCS on 2025-onward EVs. Our NACS vs J1772 explainer and CCS vs NACS guide compare them directly.
So J1772 is not being "replaced by an incompatible thing" so much as folded into a transition — and adapters bridge the gap in the meantime.
Charging a J1772 car at a Tesla-style charger
Because the installed base of Tesla Wall and Destination Chargers is huge, a J1772 car often wants to use them. A NACS-to-J1772 adapter plugs onto the Tesla-style connector and presents a J1772 plug to your car — the Lectron adapter is the common pick. This is AC only: it does not enable Supercharging, which is DC.
Charging a NACS car at a J1772 charger
The reverse case is now common too: a 2025+ car (or a Tesla) with a NACS port that wants to use the millions of existing J1772 chargers.
