How to Choose an EV Charger

Five decisions, in order, turn a wall of confusing options into one obvious pick. Here's the whole framework.

Choosing a home EV charger is not one hard decision — it is five easy ones in order: the charging level, the amperage, plug-in vs hardwired, smart vs simple, and the connector. Work through them and the wall of options collapses to a short list. For most people the answer lands on a 40- or 48-amp Level 2 charger, plug-in if you rent and hardwired if you own, and the connector your car uses.

The category looks overwhelming because every charger markets a different spec. But the specs that matter are few, and they sort into a simple sequence. Answer these five in order and you will know exactly what to buy — and, just as usefully, what to ignore.

Decision 1: Which charging level?

For a car you park at home, this is almost always Level 2 (240 volts, ~25 miles of range per hour). Level 1 (a standard outlet, ~5 miles per hour) is enough only for a plug-in hybrid or a very low-mileage driver; DC fast charging is public infrastructure you do not install at home. Decision 2: How many amps?

Decision 3: Plug-in or hardwired?

A hardwired unit is tidier and permanent and is required for the fastest 48-amp units. Own your home and want it clean, hardwired; rent or might move, plug-in.
