Charging a Ford Mustang Mach-E at Home

The Ford Mustang Mach-E charges at home through a standard J1772plug, so almost any good Level 2 charger works — no Ford-branded unit required. The Mach-E's onboard charger accepts up to about 48 amps (~11 kW) on most trims, so a 40-to-48 amp charger is the sweet spot. An adapter only matters when you want Tesla-style chargers away from home.

The outlet and install

A plug-in charger on a NEMA 14-50 outletis capped at 40 amps; hardwiring unlocks 48. Renters and movers should plug in; a permanent 48-amp install should hardwire. Either way the receptacle is a safety component under a continuous load — buy the listed industrial-grade part and use a licensed electrician.

Adapters and away-from-home charging

A NACS-to-J1772 adapterlets the J1772 Mach-E draw AC power from Tesla Wall and Destination Chargers — handy at hotels and offices. That is AC only and does not unlock Superchargers, which use Ford's DC NACS adapter and the car. Keeping AC and DC adapters straight is the one thing new owners trip over.
