NACS-to-CCS Adapters, Explained
The DC adapter that lets a CCS car use a Tesla Supercharger — a very different, more demanding part than the AC adapters most people mean.

A NACS-to-CCS adapter lets a CCS1 car use a Tesla-style NACS DC connector — for example, to fast-charge at a Supercharger. This is a DC fast-charging adapter, a very different and more demanding part than the passive AC adapters used for Level 2 home charging. Compatibility is car- and network-specific, so the first question is whether your car is approved to use one.
This is the single most confused topic in the whole adapter category, so let us be precise. The adapters we review elsewhere on the site are AC adapters: they change the plug shape for Level 2 charging and carry a lot of current, but at household voltages. A DC adapter has to carry fast-charging power, which is an entirely higher-stakes job.
Why a DC adapter is different
DC fast charging pushes far more power through the connector than any home charger, and the car and charger negotiate that power over a data link. A DC adapter has to handle both the current and that communication correctly and safely. The compatibility catch
Whether a given CCS car can use a NACS DC adapter depends on the car's approval, the adapter, and the specific Tesla Supercharger. Some Superchargers are opened to non-Tesla cars (via Magic Dock or app access) and some are not; some automakers approve specific adapters and others direct you to their own. Because of this, the honest advice is not to buy on price — it is to confirm your car's manufacturer approves the adapter and station first. Buy a DC adapter only from, or as approved by, your automaker or a reputable listing that names your exact car and confirms a proper safety rating — not an unbranded bargain. Because approvals and station access change quickly, verify current compatibility with your manufacturer before you rely on one for a trip.
