Charging a BMW iX at Home
The BMW iX uses a standard J1772 inlet, so home charging is adapter-free. Here is the setup, the real speed for its big battery, and the road picture.

The BMW iX charges at home on any standard J1772 Level 2 charger with no adapter. Its AC inlet is J1772 and DC fast charging is CCS1. Because the iX has a large battery, a full 48-amp charger is worth having — and a BMW NACS DC adapter opens Tesla Superchargers on the road.
The iX is BMW's flagship electric SUV, and its home charging follows the CCS1 pattern used by nearly every non-Tesla EV on sale before the NACS switch.
What connector it uses
AC home charging is J1772; DC fast charging is CCS1. No adapter is needed for a home charger. BMW offers a NACS DC adapter for Supercharger access — our non-Tesla Supercharger guide covers how that works.
How fast it charges at home
The iX's onboard AC charger supports up to around 11 kW, so a 48-amp circuit adds roughly 28 miles of range per hour. Its battery is big, which means Level 2 matters more — see how long charging takes for the overnight math. Work out your panel capacity with the wire size and breaker guide.
The best home setup
A 48-amp-capable unit like the ChargePoint Home Flex or Emporia makes the most of the onboard charger; compare in the best 48-amp chargers roundup. A plug-in unit needs a proper NEMA 14-50 outlet.
On the road
The iX fast-charges quickly on CCS; the BMW NACS adapter adds Superchargers. Our DC fast charging guide and preconditioning guide help you get the fastest sessions.

Most people who want the smart features too
Emporia Level 2 (48A)
The smart charger that does not charge a smart-charger premium — 48-amp capability and real energy monitoring for the price of a dumb one.

Buyers who want the established brand and app
ChargePoint Home Flex
The polished, well-supported option — adjustable up to 50 amps and tied into the largest public charging app in North America.

The outlet a plug-in charger needs
Industrial NEMA 14-50 Outlet
The receptacle a plug-in charger actually plugs into — buy the industrial-grade, listed version, because the cheap ones are the part that fails.
