CCS1 vs CCS2 Connectors

CCS1 and CCS2 are two regional versions of the same DC fast-charging idea. CCS1 is the North American plug, built on the J1772 AC connector. CCS2 is the European plug, built on the Type 2 (Mennekes) connector. They are not interchangeable— and in the US, CCS1 is the only one that matters.

What they share, and what differs

Both "combine" an AC plug with two high-power DC pins so one car port handles home and fast charging. The difference is the AC half they are built on: J1772 for CCS1, Type 2 for CCS2. That gives the two plugs a different pin layout and shape, so a CCS1 vehicle physically cannot use a CCS2 charger, and vice versa. For a broader primer, see what is a CCS connector.

Which one does a US EV use?

CCS1. Every North American non-Tesla EV that uses CCS uses CCS1. You will only encounter CCS2 on European-market cars and chargers. Importing a European EV, or vice versa, means a genuine connector mismatch that a simple travel adapter does not solve.

Where NACS fits

None of this changes the bigger shift to NACS (J3400) in North America, which is replacing CCS1 on new cars. During the transition, a NACS-to-CCS adapterbridges a CCS1 car to Tesla Superchargers. There is no CCS1-to-CCS2 adapter you should rely on — the two ecosystems are separate by design.
