Does Charging an EV Raise Your Electric Bill?

Yes — but usually by a lot less than the gas it replaces. Here is the math to work out your own number before you assume the worst.

Yes — charging at home shows up on your electric bill, but for most drivers it is a modest increase, and usually less than the gasoline it replaces. You can estimate your own number in one calculation: miles driven ÷ efficiency × electricity rate. The scary headline is almost always worse than the real bill.

The math for your car

Most EVs go 3–4 miles per kWh. Drive 1,000 miles a month at 3.5 mi/kWh and you use about 285 kWh. Why the increase is smaller than people fear

EVs are efficient, and home electricity is cheap per mile compared with public fast charging or gas. The bill rises, but it displaces a bigger fuel expense — the household usually comes out ahead overall.

How to keep it low

The biggest lever is when you charge. Many utilities offer cheaper off-peak (overnight) rates, and a smart chargeror your car's built-in scheduler can shift charging into those hours automatically.
