Charging a Tesla Model 3 at Home
Most Model 3s take 48 amps, but base trims charge slower — here is how to match the charger to your exact car and skip the upsell.

The Tesla Model 3 charges at home over its NACS port, and most trims accept up to about 11.5 kW — a 48-amp charger. The catch worth knowing: some base rear-wheel-drive Model 3s have a lower onboard-charger limit, so a big 48-amp unit buys them nothing. Check your car's charging screen for its real AC amperage.
Like every Tesla, the Model 3 does not require Tesla-branded hardware. A native-NACS charger, or a standard J1772 charger with a J1772-to-NACS adapter, does the identical job. Match the amperage to your specific trim and you avoid paying for a circuit the car cannot use.
Check your trim before buying amperage
This is the one Model 3 detail that saves money. Long Range and Performance cars generally accept the full ~11.5 kW; some base rear-wheel-drive trims across the years have shipped with a smaller onboard charger. The car itself is the source of truth — open the charging screen while plugged in and read the maximum amps it will draw. Buy to that number, not to the marketing spec.
The charger and the adapter
For a full-speed car, a 48-amp charger on a 60-amp circuit reaches the ceiling; for a slower trim, a 32- or 40-amp unit is all it can use. A native-NACS home charger plugs straight in; otherwise a J1772 unit plus a J1772-to-NACS adapter works. A dual-voltage portable is a good travel companion for a Model 3 that lives without a garage.
Outlet and circuit
A plug-in unit needs a proper NEMA 14-50 outlet on its own circuit; a 48-amp hardwired unit needs a 60-amp breaker. Confirm the wiring with the wire size and breaker guide before you commit to an amperage.
