EV Charger Wall Mount vs Pedestal

Most chargers go on a wall — but when there is no wall in the right place, a pedestal solves it. Here is how to choose.

A wall mount is the default and the cheapest, tidiest option when you have a wall where the car parks. A pedestal(a free-standing post) is the answer when you do not — a driveway, carport, or a parking spot away from the building. The charger is the same; only how it is held up changes.

When a wall mount is right

If there is a garage or exterior wall within cable reach of the port, mount to it. It is sturdy, inexpensive, keeps the unit off the ground, and makes cable management easy with a J-hook and a holster. Mind the cable length so the connector reaches the port comfortably.

When a pedestal earns its cost

A pedestal mounts the charger on a post set in the ground, so it works mid-driveway or in a carport with no usable wall. It costs more — the post, and often a longer wiring run — and needs a clean, weatherproof job. Keep either one tidy and safe

Whichever you choose, dock the connector in a holster rather than leaving it on the ground, loop the cable off the floor, and confirm the unit's outdoor rating if it is exposed. Plug-in installs still need a proper NEMA 14-50 outlet, and the mounting does not change the circuit sizing.

Do I need a pedestal for my EV charger?
Only if there is no wall within cable reach of your charge port — for example a mid-driveway or carport spot. Otherwise a wall mount is cheaper, tidier, and just as good.
