Why EVs Fast-Charge From 10 to 80 Percent

The charging curve is why nobody fast-charges to 100 percent — here is what is happening in the battery and how to use it to your advantage.

Every fast-charging time is quoted 10 to 80 percent because that is the fast part. A battery accepts high power when it is fairly empty and tapers steeply as it fills, so the final 20 percent can take as long as the first 60. On a road trip, stopping at 80 percent and driving on is almost always faster overall.

What the charging curve is

A lithium-ion pack has a charging curve: peak power near the bottom, dropping off as it fills to protect the cells. That is why a car might hit its peak DC rate at 20 percent but be crawling by 90 percent. It is normal and healthy — not a fault. See DC fast charging explained for the underlying mechanism.

Why 80 percent is the sweet spot on a trip

Because the taper is so steep, the time to go 80–100 percent often equals the time to go 10–80. On a route with chargers spaced sensibly, several short stops to 80 percent beat one long stop to 100 — and it frees the stall for the next driver, which our etiquette guide appreciates. How to get the fastest session

Arrive with the battery warm — preconditioning primes it to accept peak power — and arrive fairly low, since a battery already at 60 percent skips the fast part entirely. Does this apply to home charging?
