CCS-to-Tesla Adapters, Explained

The DC adapter that opens the CCS fast-charging network to a Tesla — first-party gear, and a different animal from a home AC adapter.

A CCS-to-Tesla adapter (the CCS Combo 1 adapter) lets a Tesla plug into a CCS DC fast charger, widening its road-trip options beyond the Supercharger network. It is a DC-ratedpart — sold and approved by Tesla for specific cars — not the passive AC adapter used for Level 2 home charging.

As the NACS transition plays out, some Tesla owners want access to the large CCS fast-charging network, and some non-Tesla drivers face the mirror-image question. This page is about the Tesla side: getting a Tesla onto CCS DC stations.

What it is, and what it is not

The CCS Combo 1 adapter is a short, rugged unit that mates a CCS1 DC connector to a Tesla's NACS port and manages the DC handshake. It is emphatically not a home-charging adapter: for AC Level 2 charging, a Tesla uses a J1772-to-Tesla AC adapter, which is a much simpler, cheaper part. Do not confuse the two — the which adapter do I need guide keeps the directions straight.

Which cars need it, and compatibility

Not every Tesla supports the CCS Combo 1 adapter, and some require a one-time in-car retrofit to enable it. Because support depends on the model, year and region, confirm your specific car's compatibility with Tesla before buying. This is also why we do not name a single "best" pick with a price: the right part is the one Tesla approves for your car, and the details shift over time.

How to buy safely

Buy the Tesla-approved CCS Combo 1 adapter, or a reputable equivalent that explicitly lists your car as supported and states a proper DC safety rating. Avoid unbranded DC adapters. And remember the scope: this part is for fast charging on the road. Your home setup is unaffected — that is still ordinary AC charging, covered in charging a Tesla at home.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is a CCS to Tesla adapter for?
It lets a Tesla use CCS DC fast chargers, expanding road-trip options beyond Superchargers. It is a DC-rated part — the Tesla-approved CCS Combo 1 adapter — not a home AC adapter.
Does every Tesla work with a CCS adapter?
No. Support depends on the model, year and region, and some cars need a one-time retrofit to enable it. Confirm your specific car's compatibility with Tesla before buying.
Do I need this to charge a Tesla at home?
No. Home charging is AC. For a Tesla to use a standard J1772 home or public Level 2 charger, you want a simple J1772-to-Tesla AC adapter, not a CCS DC adapter.
