Charging a Chevy Bolt at Home
The Bolt's onboard charger tops out lower than newer EVs, which is good news: a mid-priced 32–40 amp charger is all it can use.

The Chevy Bolt charges at home through a J1772plug, and its onboard charger tops out around 11.5 kW on later cars (7.2 kW on the earliest ones). That is the useful part: the Bolt cannot use a 48-amp charger's full speed, so a mid-priced 32-to-40 amp unit is all you need— do not overpay for headroom the car will never use.
The Bolt EV and Bolt EUV are among the most sensible EVs to charge at home precisely because they do not demand expensive hardware. There is no NACS on any Bolt — it is J1772 all the way — and its appetite for AC power is modest, which keeps both the charger and the circuit cheaper than a big-battery truck would need.
The connector: J1772, no adapter needed
Every Bolt uses the J1772 AC connector at home and CCS for DC fast charging. Because it is a J1772 car, ordinary home charging needs no adapter at all. If you ever want to use Tesla-style AC chargers at a hotel or workplace, a NACS-to-J1772 adapter bridges that, but that is optional and only for away-from-home Tesla AC equipment.
How much charger the Bolt can actually use
This is where Bolt owners save money. A later Bolt's onboard charger accepts up to about 11.5 kW (48 amps) on paper, but many owners are perfectly served by a 32-amp charger and see little daily difference, because the car's battery is small enough to refill overnight at a modest rate. A well-certified 40-amp value unit like the EVIQO Level 2 is the sweet spot; our best budget EV chargers roundup collects the cheapest units that still carry a real safety listing. Spending up for a 48-amp charger and the 60-amp circuit it needs is money the Bolt will not repay.
The outlet, or skip it with a portable
A plug-in charger needs a NEMA 14-50 outlet— buy the industrial-grade, listed version and have a licensed electrician install it. For a budget-minded Bolt owner, a portable charger such as the MUSTART 40A is an especially good fit: it plugs into that same outlet, costs less than a mounted smart unit, and comes with you if you move. Many Bolt owners never need more than a portable on a 14-50.
Can I just use the wall outlet?
The Bolt came with a versatile occasional-use cord (a dual-level unit on later cars), and on a standard 120-volt outlet it adds only about 3–5 miles of range per hour — fine for a low-mileage week, too slow for a daily commute. If your daily driving is light, Level 1 charging can genuinely be enough for a Bolt; if not, a Level 2 setup pays off. Our regular-outlet guide walks through when 120-volt charging is and is not enough.
