Charging a Rivian R1T & R1S at Home
Rivian's own Wall Charger is one option, not the only one. The R1 charges over J1772 at home, so the whole third-party market is open to you.

A Rivian R1T or R1S charges at home through a J1772AC plug, so you do not need Rivian's own Wall Charger — any good Level 2 J1772 charger works. Because the batteries are large, a 48-amp charger earns its keepby shortening the overnight fill. Rivian is moving to NACS, so newer trucks may add a native NACS port and a Supercharger adapter — but home AC charging stays J1772 for the current fleet.
Rivian's Wall Charger is a solid unit, but it is a single-brand choice at a single-brand price. Since the R1 uses the same J1772 connector as most non-Tesla EVs, the competitive third-party charger market is fully available — usually cheaper and often with features the branded unit lacks.
The connector and the NACS transition
Today's R1T and R1S use J1772 for AC charging and CCS for DC fast charging. Rivian has committed to NACS, and has provided a NACS adapter so owners can use Tesla Superchargers for DC; future trucks are expected to carry a native NACS port. None of that changes the home setup for a current Rivian: your garage charger is an AC J1772 unit. If your specific truck has a NACS port, use a native NACS charger or a J1772 charger plus a J1772-to-NACS adapter instead.
What Level 2 charger to buy
The R1's big battery is the reason to favor a 48-amp charger: more amps means more range added per overnight hour, which matters when the pack is this large. A 48-amp unit needs a 60-amp circuit — check your panel, because that is often the real constraint. If the panel cannot spare it, a 40-amp charger like the Emporia Level 2 still fills the truck overnight for most driving. The wire size and breaker guide shows what each circuit requires.
Hardwire for the extra speed
A plug-in charger on a NEMA 14-50 outlet caps at 40 amps; hardwiring is what unlocks 48. For a large Rivian battery kept long-term, hardwiring is a popular choice for the extra speed and clean install. The circuit and the receptacle are a licensed-electrician job on a properly sized breaker.
